The Inverell Honor Roll

Inverell is believed to be the first town in NSW to establish a Roll of Honor listing those who took part in the Great War. The Mayor, Ald. J. F. O'Connor, promoted the idea in October 1914.  By early January 1915, the Municipal Council had adopted the plan in order to give public recognition to the district's young men; to also help promote enlistment and to preserve their names for future generations.  The Singleton Argus, 23 January, 1915, reported ...

Our large brass framed Honor Roll was designed by architect, Herbert E. Ross, and has a Royal Coat of Arms at the top with the inscription ...

     To our comrades of the Inverell District who participated in the Great War 1914-1918. 

It was dedicated by NSW Governor Strickland in August 1916 and kept at the Town Hall until 1958 when it was moved to the front of the Memorial Swimming Pool where it now faces the Cenotaph.
