Ethel was born at Bundarra in 1880 to James and Margery Jackson. She trained at Brisbane Hospital and worked there before becoming Matron at Lady Musgrave Hospital, Maryborough, Queensland.
Prior to enlisting in May 1917 she worked with the Australian Army Nursing Service for six months. After arriving in England in July 1917 Ethel was attached to the 1st Australian Army Hospital for duty at Croydon War Hospital.
Ethel returned to Australia in 1919. During the 1930s she lived and worked in the Armidale district of NSW. Ethel died in 1940 and at her funeral returned soldiers formed a guard of honor. She was buried at Ollera cemetery.
