Inverell Remembers World War 1
The outbreak of World War I brought an immediate rush of local volunteers wanting to serve their country. Within days, men departed Inverell by train to enlist in Sydney.
By the end of 1915 approximately 600 men had already volunteered. In all, more than 1200 men and women from the Inverell District served during the War. At least one in five died. They served in German New Guinea, Egypt, The Middle East, France, Belgium and India. Their stories are many and varied.
To support the War effort at home, the community worked hard too. In addition to encouraging enlistment, men, women and children raised funds for numerous appeals, made clothing, knitted socks and sent food parcels. Patriotic enthusiasm meant the spirit of volunteering and giving was huge. Supporting the War was indeed a massive community event.
To remember all those who contributed to Inverell’s amazing War effort, a Re-enactment of the extraordinary Kurrajong ‘snowball’ recruiting March of 1916 was held on 10 January 2016. Approximately 500 people marched, coming from all around Australia and overseas to participate.
