DOWNEY, George Stanley

George was living at Inverell before he enlisted in Sydney in June 1916. His enlistment record states he was a twenty-six-year-old Hotel Porter, born at South Shields, England, with his current address as Post Office, Inverell.

George became a member of the 53rd Battalion, 7th Regiment and sailed from Australia for England on HMAT A11 Acscanius in October 1916. After three months training, he was sent to France at the end of February 1917. Just a few weeks later he was Killed in action and buried at Noreuil Australian Cemetery, France. His mother, Ann Isabella Hackney, provided information about George for the Roll of Honour of Australia at the Memorial War Museum, stating Inverell was the Town he was associated with in Australia.

George Downey’s name is not recorded on the Inverell Honor Roll.
