DOUST, Robert

Robert’s birth to Walter and Jemima Doust was registered at Inverell. In January 1915, at the age of nineteen, he enlisted at Liverpool NSW giving his occupation as Grocer and stating he had previous military service of four years with the 13th Infantry and Cadets.

Robert joined the 4th Battalion 5th Reinforcement and sailed from Sydney for Egypt on HMAT A55 Kyarra in April 1915. He served at Gallipoli where he was wounded in action, and returned to Cairo where his right leg was amputated. Months later he was invalided to Australia and medically discharged the following year.

At both Inverell and Glen Innes, he was given a civic reception upon his arrival home. He married in 1929 and during the 1930s lived at Penrith NSW where his children were born. Robert died in 1944.

Robert’s name is recorded on the Inverell Honor Roll. His three brothers, Albert, Ernest and Roy also served during the War.
